An update

Just wanted to update you guys. I know we are about a month late, but we’re getting very close now. By Wednesday I will have finished this year’s semester and will have 2 months of vacation, which means I’ve got loads of time. Right now I’ve been juggling a part-time job, school and Navia while still trying to stay fairly social. That’s why things have been going so slowly.

Soft launch

Hello everyone! The server is now pretty much ready. We’ve added a temporary solution for local chat. You are in local chat by default with a range of 50 blocks (might be too much, we’ll see how it goes) and you can use global chat by prefixing your message with an exclamation mark. Our own plug-in aimed at role-playing will follow later.

Now, the reason this is only a soft launch is that we are still polishing up the joining process. We want to make it fast, but still effective. We also want to make sure people are informed when they join the server perhaps with some kind of OOC first-time-spawn place. When this is done, we’ll start seeking out players, so you guys won’t be alone on the server.

Till then, keep reporting glitches in the software and the landscape. See you soon.

Semi-launch! 1.5.2

There we go! The map is now 25 tiles compared to the 1 tile we had before. It’s still only the Kandal area near the Fiery Mountains of Gorna, but we’ll be expanding the map as our player-base does the same. This map is the map we’ll launch with, meaning that there are only a couple of behind-the-scenes things to do before we launch officially.

We still need to polish the new map. The water in the valley is broken again, but that won’t take too long to fix. Also, there are lot of areas which aren’t smoothed yet. Will happen soon! We managed to save the structures, so that’s a plus at least! That also means we can expand on the current map in the future, instead of creating separate maps which you can teleport between. Awesome.

Hop on! 216.59.3.140 – We’re on 1.5.2, by the way!

Server down, don’t worry!

Hello again. Firstly, I would like to apologize again. Due to time constraints the Navia project has been only slowly progressing. While I can not say exactly how much more time we need, it’s certainly not a lot. The most time-consuming process we need to finish now is application reviews. Once we get through this first batch, we’ll start recruiting white-listers to speed up the application process (the goal being that we can guarantee the first review within 24 hours).

Also, the server is down. We’re updating, and our host is also moving some things around. It’ll be online again soon.

Thanks, see you soon!

Spambot Countermeasures

We’ve been cleaning up on the site. This means that we’ve installed a new type of captcha and that we’re deleting any users without any posts. If you haven’t posted anything, don’t worry, you can easily register again.

Sorry.

Hello everybody. As you probably know, we promised to launch the server of Navia by the end of April. We’ve worked hard trying to make that happen, juggling school, work and personal projects around to make room for Navia. I am sorry, however, to say, that we will not be launching Navia today. Approaching launch-date, I was suddenly overwhelmed with meetings, appointments and school-work, which means I virtually haven’t been in contact with Arctic, and therefore we have not managed to meet all the goals for launching the server.

It’s not that we aren’t able to launch the server right in this very moment, but we’d rather wait a few more days, perhaps just a bit more than a week, to be able to bring you a role-playing experience up to the standards of your expectations and the standards Navia was once known for.

In the end, this is nothing more than an apology. I am incredibly sorry for not delivering on time.

What will happen know? Well, we will most likely begin reviewing applications today to make sure we actually have players ready for the launch. And I’ll make sure to keep you updated on what’s going on. Hopefully some more transparency will make the wait feel shorter.

The Map of Navia

In Tales of Navia we will be playing on a completely hand-painted and hand-decorated map, which the players are free to alter. To make up for the sacrifice of the infinity of Minecraft worlds, we are creating a huge map. I have drawn a sketch of the map of Navia (this is old. The terrain is the same, but the names are not final). Please excuse my crappy drawing.

Map of Navia (Idea)

We are creating this map with WorldPainter. WorldPainter divides maps into tiles that are 128*128 blocks. However, on the following picture we consider one tile to be equivalent of 5*5 WorldPainter tiles. This map also shows the location of Kandal and just how tiny a portion of the entire map it is.

As you can see, this map is going to be huge. ~965 tiles I think. Of course all of this won’t be ready for launch, but we’ll be expanding the map as we progress. There is also no reason why we should be limited to this, this is just only what we’ve planned so far.

We are currently working on the first 25 tiles. These consist of Kandal and its surroundings near the Fiery Mountains of Gorna. Coming up is a snapshot of the current progress of this. Tile-borders of the first iteration (1->9 tiles) are barely visible, but you should be able to see the borders of the map on the test-server. The borders of the second iteration (9->25 tiles) are still very much visible though.

I really hope you’re going to like it. Have a good one!

Sounds of Navia

The Unspoken Pact – Theme of Navia

Here it is, the official theme of Navia. I reckon it can be used in some sort of trailer later on, but for now you can just listen to it here:

I’m not quite satisfied with the mix yet, but I’ll make sure to delve deeper into that area of the recording if/when we use it.

EDIT: Server is back up, but we’re re-doing the rivers. The camp will be pasted back in within an hour.

We’re still alive

We’ve been running into some issues having enough time getting everything ready, which means we’ve delayed the release of the story of the first chapter. We won’t move the launch date, though. Just wanted to reassure you that we are still alive, and so is the Navia project, there are just a couple of things which both Arctic and I have to prioritize at the moment.

Screw real life.

Test-server now open! Apply now for quick access!

It’s live – 216.59.3.140

How do I get on? Read on to apply on the website, or apply on MinecraftForums.net

Please note that anything can happen on the test-server, and we may be unable to recover files if everything goes wrong. Please continue reading.

First, you should know that, when you log in, you will be in the camp of Kandal. They are currently reside this camp because of a flood as described in this background story:

The milling town of Kandal hosts a small, but somewhat prosperous community, who spend their days milling grain gathered from the fields above the valley in which the town is situated. It also hosts a small selection of guilds and mercenary companies. A fat, fast-flowing river curls and cuts through and next to the town. Every year the river swells with the autumn rains.

This year, however, the rains have not subsided, here or upstream. The town has been flooded, with severe damage forcing its inhabitants and visitors to leave for good- the soil of the valley, loosened by the farming at its edges, slips more every day, landslides striking at unpredictable moments.

The survivors must make their way up and out of the valley with whatever they can, and find somewhere to start life anew.

Make an application here to get access: http://landsofnavia.com/phpBB/viewforum.php?f=8 - Note, that you do not need to finish your application just yet, and that you do not need to describe your character for the test-server. As long as you provide a Minecraft user-name and some material to confirm that you are a fit role-player, we will allow you access to the test-server.

Eww, it’s ugly!

We design and build using John Smith’s texture pack. Medieval-type structures usually look a bit weird in the default texture pack, but any medieval-type texture pack usually does the job pretty well.

There is something wrong!

Report any and all issues here: http://landsofnavia.com/phpBB/viewforum.php?f=23

Have fun!
